Founding chancellor Carol Tomlinson-Keasey began in 1999, before the opening of campus, and retired in 2006. Sung-Mo “Steve” Kang was chancellor from 2007-2011. Juan Sánchez Muñoz was named fourth chancellor and began his tenure July 1, 2020, succeeding Dorothy Leland, the visionary and architect of the Merced 2020 Project to expand campus, who served from 2011-2019.
