Now we come to the tragic end of Greg The Boulder. I had both of them make STR or CON checks but otherwise it was a free method of getting a mount for two people. So they would ride Greg the human Paladin carrying the dwarf Ranger. Now, when PC's argue something that would happen in the real would that isn't in the rules I tend to allow it, or try and modify it to work. To hopefully clarify myself here is an example : one of my players asked if he could have a Roc as a familier, so being the mischievous GM I am, I gave him a rock. Now I will take responsibility for the fact that that is part of my attempt to correct my mistake if the familier I gave was way more powerful then intended. That being said I sometimes give my players extra familier types with additional abilities, so when one dies when they call it again perhaps it will have the same mechanics but it will be a different spirit/entity. Likewise I see no reason you can't call on a different spirit all together, even though the spell seems to lean that it is the same spirit. Presumably this means that when a familiar reduced to 0 dies, it no longer can retain its physical form becomes a spirit again as long as you call it again I don't see any reason why that spirit would not be willing to serve again in the same or different form. This seems to be a middle ground to 3.5 summon creature and familiar it is not just energy you are shaping it is a spirit that is not otherwise connected to you. In this version (5e) it seems to point more to a "spirit" that you get to shape into a form that that serves your purpose, when it dies you can perform the ritual again and regain your familiar. penalty for losing a familiar in 3.5 and not for the death of a conjured creature, the familiar is a part of you. This is different from summoned creatures as you are conjuring energy from another plane and shaping it how you please, this is why you can summon 100 boars but get no meat it is a shaped piece of energy taking on the form of a boar (in matrix terms there is no boar). A sort of division of the consciousness taking a symbolic form that granted powers to the summoner and becoming stronger with the wizard.
